After I was through the worst of my recovery from PCS I was looking into organizations that help people with brain injuries, because I realized it is a large group of people with a large need. I was pointed in the direction of the Brain Injury Association of Michigan (BIAMI). There is a national group, and state chapters. They advocate for brain injury victims and families, helping them find information and resources. They host support groups in towns around the state. I am a part of the Lansing area support group (although I missed a lot of meetings this summer for the Michigan Reining horse shows), and to raise awareness for a fundraiser they held in December I was asked to do an interview for the Lansing State Journal. A link to the article is below. It describes a small part of what the experience was like for me. I am one of the lucky ones who has been able to rather quickly resume my regular activities and get back to my life, although with some changes. Some people are permanently disabled, experience loss of relationships, careers and more. If you are looking for a place to help out, please consider donating to BIAMI to help support those in our area who are in the midst of the struggle.
